The term "napkin" originated from the French word "nappe," which refers to a tablecloth. "Serviette" is derived from the old French word for "serve." Both napkins and serviettes can be made from either paper or cloth and serve the same functional purpose.
Tissues, however, are typically made softer to avoid irritation of the sensitive skin around the nose. Napkins and serviettes, on the other hand, are made from sturdier materials to prevent them from falling apart when used to wipe up spills and messes.
