MATERIAL DETAILS

PLA BIOPLASTIC (POLYLACTIC ACID)

This product is made from PLA (Polylactic Acid) which is a renewable bioplastic. It performs in the same way as any other plastic cup, the difference being it is fully certified to EN13632 as a compostable product. The European standard EN 13432 defines the minimum requirements packaging has to meet in order to be processed by industrial composting.

PLA (polylactic acid) bioplastic packaging is a type of packaging material made from renewable sources, such as corn starch or sugarcane.

PLA bioplastic packaging has several benefits over traditional packaging materials such as petroleum-based plastics. Firstly, it is a renewable resource, which means that it can be produced without depleting non-renewable resources. Secondly, it is compostable and can disintegrate into natural materials, reducing the amount of waste that goes into landfills. Lastly, it has a lesser carbon footprint compared to traditional plastics, which helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

PLA bioplastic packaging is commonly used in food packaging, disposable cups, and utensils. However, it is important to note that while PLA bioplastic is biodegradable, it still requires specific conditions, such as high temperatures, to break down completely. Therefore, it is important to properly dispose of PLA bioplastic products to ensure they can fully decompose.

When disposing of PLA products, they should be separated from general waste and sent to an industrial compost facility for processing.

PLA is not recyclable.

DISPOSAL

PLA BIOPLASTIC (POLYLACTIC ACID)

PLA bioplastic (code 7) is commercially compostable. It will break down into non-toxic particles after 12 weeks given the correct conditions.

PLA should be disposed of through your food waste collection scheme. Note that our PLA-Bioplastic is not suitable for home composting. If you do not send your food waste for composting and you do not have a closed-loop system for compostable packaging, you should consider whether compostable packaging is the correct option for your business.

To determine if a product is made from PLA bioplastic, check for the left-hand embossed symbol found on the base of the product.

PLA bioplastic is a biodegradable substance, meaning it can break down into natural materials when subjected to certain conditions, such as high temperatures or moisture.

PLA is not recyclable and should not be placed in a recycling bin as it is a contaminant. PLA should be disposed of using a commercially compostable bin if possible. If a compostable bin isn't available it should be disposed of using a general waste bin.
